Lebanese Stamps
Stamps are interesting precious small pieces of papers, published in different sizes and shapes, representing the sovereignty of a nation. They are initially used as evidence of payment of postage.
Moreover, they are considered as an information source, a recording medium that illustrate many aspects of a society by providing historical, political, legal, cultural, artistic and commercial information related to the country they represent. Beirut Public Library aims to promote appreciation of the postage stamps, postal history of Lebanon and philatelic research. The project started when a small collection of Lebanese stamps was donated to the Library. Through a private grant, the library started to build, organize, preserve and conserve the collection. |
"National Libraries are perhaps the most obvious subjects for library postal art because they are a measure of a country's intellectual and artistic wealth" (Eberhart, 1982). |
